  • The increasing concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide, recorded in the last years, made the research of green alternative technologies necessary to reduce the emissions of this gas. In this respect, the Chlorophycean macroalga Chaetomorpha linum (O.F. Müller) Kützing, abundantly present in the Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Italy), was tested for the bio-remediation of atmospheric CO2 and the biofuels production. Lab-cultures were performed to assess both its photosynthetic activity and its fatty acids distribution and abundance at a CO2 concentration equal to 0.04 % – 5% – 10% (mol) in the gas phase at a temperature of both 14 °C and 24°C, irradiance 92 mmol m-2 s-1, weight/volume 30g/4.2 L. At a 5% CO2 concentration, C. linum photosynthetic activity is usually enhanced, with the highest mean production of 0.55 ± 0.11 mLO2 mgfw-1h-1, compared to a control value of 0.39 ± 0.09 mLO2 mgfw-1 h-1. On the contrary, at a 10% CO2 concentration, photosynthetic activity is lowered, i.e. 0.13 ± 0.03 mLO2mgfw-1h-1 versus 0.68 ± 0.12 mLO2mgfw-1h-1 of the control. Concering growth, at both the CO2 concentrations tested, specific growth rates were lower than in the controls. With respect to fatty acids, it resulted that both their production and distribution vary at the rising of CO2 concentration. In fact, under 10% CO2 , their total amount increases by 50 % and that of phytols by 40-50 %; 16:1 fatty acids are almost doubled with respect to the control, 18:1 and 18:2 are almost tripled.
