  • This paper deals with the technical issues related to the design and realization of a common mode transformer (CMT) for active filtering of Common Mode (CM) electromagnetic interference (EMI). The CMT is utilized in active filters based on CM voltage compensation. These filters are very effective devices for minimizing the impact of the PWM inverter output waveforms on a three phase induction motor, increasing the overall drive reliability and its electromagnetic compatibility. The CMT is a crucial part of such devices because it performs the injection of a compensation voltage into the power connections between the inverter and the motor, leading to the disturbance cancellation at the motor terminals. In this paper, a circuit model of the CMT, useful to perform simulation analysis, is described and the choice of the CMT structure and magnetic core material is discussed. The problem of the magnetic saturation, related to the desired high power/weight ratio is deeply investigated. Furthermore a comparison of CMTs, realized with ferrite cores and with nanocrystalline material cores respectively, is presented, including simulation and experimental verifications of the CMT performance.
