  • In the framework of BBSO exercise (http://www.accent-network.org/), three global datasets of monthly CO emissions were derived from burned areas estimated respectively from SPOT-VGT, a coupling between SPOT-VGT and Envisat-ATSR and Terra/Aqua-MODIS data using common land cover map and emission factors at the resolution of 0.5°x0.5° for the year 2003. We analyzed the spatial and temporal agreement of the three products on a cell basis and through spatio-temporal syntheses over the globe and over six continental windows. Comparisons were also carried out per land cover type. Preliminary results show a great variability in terms of absolute CO estimates. At the global scale VGT, ATSR/VGT and MODIS-derived products estimated about 1422, 547, 770 Tg of CO emitted from fires in 2003. The best agreement occurs over Africa and the greatest disagreement was found for Northern America where VGT showed two peaks of CO emissions, in spring and autumn, and the other products one peak around August.
