  • The aim of the paper is to provide a more comprehensive view of the evolution of supply systems in the aircraft industry. It investigates two evolving options. The first option presents the typical characteristics of the extended enterprise, while the second is based on the virtual enterprise model. Companies involved in the first option may gain advantage from stable relationships that allow the enlargement of traditional competences. Companies involved the second option may provide a higher level of flexibility without incurring in the risks connected with the growth of size and exploiting additional market opportunities.
