- The greatest fuel efficiency advantages of GDI engines are surely achieved by adopting the so called mixed mode boosting, where different mixture conditions have to be realized in dependence of the specific engine working conditions. In particular, in the medium range of load and speed, the direct injection stratified charge (DISC) has to be preferred. DISC is recently becoming a production reality due to the development of sophisticated high-pressure injectors, producing very fine, well-defined fuel sprays, and of highly efficient NOx lean catalysts.
The paper is intended to report the results of optimization analyses aimed at increasing the energetic efficiency of a GDI engine equipped with a high pressure multi-hole injector. Moderate speed, moderate load conditions are studied into detail, with the air-to-fuel ratio maintained lean. Both single and double injection events are considered, as preliminary characterized from an experimental point of view in a Bosch tube. The choice of the start of injection and/or the dwell time between successive pulses is optimised to maximize the engine work by coupling a 3D model of the in-cylinder processes to a Simplex algorithm. The optimal solution obtained in the case injection is realized in two events is shown to reduce the fuel consumption with respect to the case injection is realized in one shot. Split injections thus improve the quality of the charge stratification under lean operation.
The assessed procedure is proven to be a valuable tool in the phase of engine design. (literal)
