  • The paper reports the results obtained by experimental investigations of the combustion process and pollutant formation in a PFI SI boosted engine. High spatial resolution digital imaging was applied to follow the flame propagation from the spark ignition to the exhaust phase. Two-colour pyrometry allowed to measure the concentration of soot produced by to the diffusion-controlled flames near the valves and on the cylinder walls. In-cylinder optical investigations were correlated with the engine parameters and with the exhaust emissions measured by conventional methods. (literal)
