- This paper presents a new model able to analyze complex mechanical systems experiencing both early failures and degradation phenomena, and operating so long that the intensity function approaches a finite asymptote. The characteristics of the proposed model are illustrated and maximum likelihood estimators of the model parameters and of some quantities of interest (such as the times at which the trend of the intensity function changes, the lowest value of the intensity function and the expected number of early failures) are given. Inference on the number of failures that will occur in future time intervals is also provided. The proposed model has been applied to real failure data referring to the powertrain of two buses operating in urban and suburban routes of Naples. (literal)
