  • Catalytic converters for automotive use are subjected to a gradual degradation of their performance due to a progressive deactivation of initial active surface. A system performance closely related to physical degradation is the level of complex hydrocarbons emissions measured by a standardized driving cycle. Often, the measure of this performance is affected by a not negligible experimental error. In this paper a stochastic model for the performance degradation process of a catalyst is proposed which also takes into account the presence of experimental error. Procedures for estimating model parameters are derived and applied to a case study. The proposed stochastic model appears to fit well the experimental data and allows to formulate predictions, in terms of the actual degradation process, on the percentage of cars whose emission levels at a given mileage are greater than a fixed threshold.
