  • Ship Diesel engines are requested to have high reliability and availability levels, due to strong requirements in service and operation. A major factor in determining effective life of naval Diesel engines is ring/liner wear, whose major contribution is given by abrasive mechanism due to soot particles. Then, in order to assure high reliability and availability levels, a maintenance activity, including inspection, repair and replacement, is performed on cylinder liners to avoid failures due to over-wear. This paper presents a statistical based methodology able to optimise the maintenance activity of the cylinder liners of naval Diesel engines. The wear process of a cylinder liner is described through an ad hoc cumulative damage model and, on the basis of wear measures and predictions of wear growth, a procedure for planning condition-based maintenance activity is proposed, that allows the analyst to decide whether a) to perform the scheduled inspection or to defer it to a successive epoch, and b) to replace the cylinder liner or not. In such a way, the inspection costs can be significantly reduced without injuring the component reliability. The proposed model and planning procedure have been applied to a data set consisting of wear measures of the cylinder liners of two SULZER RTA 58 engines equipping twin ships of the Grimaldi Group.
