- Optical investigation of evaporating n-tetradecane droplets, optically trapped in air, was succesfully carried out. A 2-beam trap able to block particles of several tens of microns was set up and tested. Shadowgraphy was applied to observe and control the trapping process. Generalized Scattering Imaging out-of-focus technique was used to follow the droplet evolution. The developed trap is able to block droplets also in presence of buoyancy forces and for large variations of the droplet mass. Droplet volume reduction as large as 90% was followed in the reported tests. This was allowed by the combined use of a stable trap, insensitive to large variations of the properties of the trapped particles, and GSI technique, able to characterize particles even if their properties vary largely. This synergic approach can be of particular relevance in all applications when no contact suspension and diagnostics systems have to be used. In the paper the analysis of the trapping forces as well as details on the experimental trap are given. (literal)
