- The results indicated that for all examined systems the presence of reactive groups on polymer chains and cellulose surface enhanced the compatibility, improving the interfacial adhesion between cellulose and matrix. SEM analysis pointed out large morphological changes of the polymer-fibre interface both for EVA-MA and EVA-GMA, and for Cell-MA and Cell-GMA based composites, as compared to unmodified systems. The occurrence of chemical interactions of the anhydride and epoxy moieties of MA and GMA, respectively, with hydroxyl groups of cellulose was demonstrated by FT-IR analysis. Further, a higher thermal resistance and tensile properties as elastic modulus, failure strength and elongation at break were disclosed for composites with GMA functionalized cellulose and/or polymer.
