- The paper reports preliminary analyses of a 140,000 m3 rock slide extending over the entire width of a quarry front
in a limestone formation with clay interbeds. Geometry of the slide is examined on the basis of a detailed description of joint
orientation and spacing. Geotechnical laboratory investigations on the interbed materials indicate that the residual shear strength is
significantly affected by the percentage of coarser grains and hard scales, which in turn seems to be dependent on the amount of
shear displacement. Spatial distribution of displacement vectors is analysed and a correlation between the time histories of
displacements and rainfall was found. Limit equilibrium analyses confirm the key role of hydraulic pressures in the vertical joints
and along the sliding surface. All the calculations yield a global mobilized shear strength greater than the residual value of the clay
interbeds. Possible causes of this discrepancy are to be found in the variability of the mobilized strength along the slip surface, in
the effect of bedding joint undulations and in the contribution of strength along the lateral boundaries of the rock wedge. (literal)
