- Abstract
- A regional study of the Pelagian Sea, a proven petroleum province, and surrounding regions has been carried out to reassess the prospectivity in the Maltese Area 4 and to review the play concepts that have inspired exploration activity in this area.
Based on the results of this study, favourable conditions for hydrocarbon accumulation are expected within the Area 4 blocks. The most attractive zone is localised within the NNW-SSE trending Melita-Medina graben. Following the reconstructed Cretaceous-Palaeogene structural and stratigraphic evolution, two different petroleum plays have been delineated, namely the Eocene and the Upper Cretaceous plays. Two Play Fairway Maps have been elaborated to show the geographical distribution of the key geological factors likely to control hydrocarbon accumulations.
The Eocene play consists of Lower Eocene bioclastic mounds and accumulations deposited in a carbonate ramp setting (El Garia Fm equivalent), sealed by Middle-Upper Eocene shales (Souar Fm equivalent), and charged during Miocene-Pleistocene from Albian (Lower Fahdene Fm) and Cenomanian-Turonian (Bahloul Fm) source rocks. Combination of structural (inversion anticlines) and stratigraphic traps have been recognised.
The Upper Cretaceous play is made up by Upper Cretaceous shelf margin carbonates (equivalent to Isis and Miskar reservoirs) sealed by Maastrichtian-Paleogene shales and marls (El Haria Fm equivalent), and charged during the Eocene-Pleistocene from Albian (Lower Fahdene Fm) and Cenomanian-Turonian (Bahloul Fm) source rocks. Traps are represented by shelf-margin reefal buildups and tilted fault blocks. (literal)
