  • ABSTRACT: Previously we showed that imaginal evocation of emotionally relevant hurtful events followed by forgiving or not forgiving was associated with modulation of brain areas implicated in visual/semantic representation and imagery, and with activation of more anterior areas, such as frontal and superior temporal cortex, amygdala, anterior cingulate and striatum, involved in the regulation of emotional responses and pain, moral judgment, and decision-making processes. Although not always concordant, results from behavioral studies indicated differences in empathy and willingness to forgive between males and females. Furthermore, several functional studies have shown that patterns of brain activity associated with emotional processing and affective behavior may differ between the two genders. The present study wished to determine whether patterns of brain activity associated with the imaginal process of giving or withholding forgiving differ between men and women. (literal)
