  • ABSTRACT: Several fMRI studies indicated that the extrastriate cortical areas in the ventral and dorsal \"visual\" pathways are capable of processing both visual and tactile sensory information. Specifically, visual and tactile object recognition evoked category-related patterns of response in ventral extrastriate visual areas, that were correlated across modalities. Blind subjects also demonstrated object category-related patterns of response in these ventral cortical areas (1). Similarly, the hMT+ complex and dorsal \"visual\" areas also showed a supramodal organization during visual and tactile perception of coherently moving dot patterns and object spatial detection both in sighted and blind individuals. This study wished to investigate whether this supramodal organization of the hMT+ complex also extends to the auditory modality (literal)
