Abstract
  • Microwave heating has been used with different degree of success for the disinfestation of biotic agents, in several fields, including wood (xilophageous insects), soils (nematodes and other pathogen organisms), grains (insects). The feasibility of treating biodeteriogens on stone and materials alike, in particular lichens and algae, by means of microwave radiation is investigated, and a new type of reactive applicator is described The advantages of microwaves over conventional techniques (chemical biocides) and less conventional ones (e.g. laser) are: safety, no pollution, low-interaction with the substrate, respect to the former ones; treatment extension, colour-independence, penetration depth, respect to the latter ones.
