- ABSTRACT: An overview of the most recent advancements achieved on the conceptual design of a \"zero emission\" coal fired power generation process is presented. The novelty of it consists in the integration of a cryogenic Air Separation Unit, to supply oxygen for the combustion, with a Carbon liquefaction and capture system operated by the cryogenic by-products of the Oxygen production. Moreover, the cryogenic carbon capture process, leading to liquid (or solid) CO2, allows the fractional distillation, into liquid or solid phase, of most of the pollutants entrained in flue gases, and in particular sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides (very scarce in oxy-combustion), mercury and fly ashes. The result is a true \"zero gas emission\" system with acceptable efficiency and limited cost for CO2 mitigation. The suitability of it as retrofit of coal fired power plants of the current, and near future, generation, is demonstrated. Retrofittability is a very important issue for an effective CCS strategy in coal fired power generation plants. (literal)
