  • Nanostructured materials are receiving increasing attention due to their unique structural and physical properties. In particular, nanostructured TiO2 (titania) photocatalytic materials are attractive for their non-toxic, clean and safe properties as well as for their thermal stability. Polycrystalline TiO2 particles are commercially available and for practical applications they are often used as aqueous suspensions. However, the interest in titanium dioxide films has recently surpassed that of TiO2 colloids in their photocatalytic applications, as they can be used in solar cells, selfcleaning windows, electrochromic devices and sensors technology. • This paper focuses on the preparation by MOCVD of thin TiO2 coated Pt films or Pt-TiO2 nanocomposites grown onto the surface of glass rods for utilization as smart electrodes for voltammetric measurements and analytical determinations. The suitability of such electrode systems for voltammetric and photoelectrochemical measurements are investigated by cyclic voltammetry in aqueous solutions containing the model redox systems such as H+/H2, Fe(CN)6 3-/4-and Ru(NH3)6 3+/2+. Because the photocatalytic properties of TiO2 can be further enhanced by its modification with foreign metal or metal oxide, the photoelectrochemical properties are also exploited for trace analysis of metal ions or small organic molecule, either in synthetic aqueous solutions and some real samples.
