- The growing demand of geographically referenced meteorological information for agro-meteorological uses on wide scales needs the accurate description of climatic parameter over large areas. The territorial application of harvest modelling, requires the description in space of point based observations. To this effect, the choice of the appropriate methodology of interpolation of climatic data is crucial in order to obtain a correct representation of climatic fields. In fact, the choice of the methodology depends on the purpose and the time span of the analysis, the category of the variable to interpolate, the morphologic characterisation of the study area, and the number of the available point of observation (i.e. rain gauges).
Up to date, geostatistics offers a large set of tools and many of these are implemented in GIS commercial software. In this paper it is compared and discussed the statistical performance of some techniques widely used in climatic spatialization, like ordinary kriging, cokriging and weighted regression model with residual correction. The comparison between the different methods was carried out by computing RMSE by cross-validation of a selected dataset covering Tuscany region. The reference framework for this analysis was provided by DESERTNET PROJECT (Interreg III B Pilot Action in Tuscany Region), that focused on the assessment of sensitivity to desertification in Tuscany Region.
