  • Monoterpene emission represented an overall carbon loss of 1-2% from this Mediterranean ecosystem that in autumn is a source of carbon and is under strong drought stresses. These highly reactive biogenic compounds might provide positive feedback, concurring in organic secondary aerosol formation and, by consequence, reducing global radiation. They could also generate negative feedback on greenhouse warming since they are involved in the photochemical formation of ozone in the troposphere (literal)

  • Biogenic emission of volatile organic compound (VOC) such as isoprenoids could play an important role in the global change issue by regulating the oxidation potential of the troposphere and acting as precursors of ozone and secondary aerosol formation. Furthermore, isoprenoid emission represents a loss of the assimilated carbon by photosynthesis and it is thus important to consider this fraction when the carbon budget of an ecosystem is evaluated. The aim of this study was to assess isoprenoid fluxes from a Mediterranean ecosystem in relation with the carbon budget using the micrometeorological approach of the Trap enrichment Relaxed Eddy Accumulation (TREA). This system, in combination with GC-MS analysis, is considered to have a great potential for investigating the exchange of VOC between biosphere and atmosphere. Emission information at both leaf and canopy scale were also provided combining the TREA measurements with the branch enclosure technique. (literal)
