  • Ancient coastal quarries of calcarenites have been identified along the south-eastern coast of the Province of Taranto. They are located at Torre Ovo, Madonna d’Alto Mare and Campomarino. The identification was based on morphological evidence, on the existence of trace marks normally associated with the extraction and working of materials, and on the presence of partially worked blocks abandoned on site, which bear similarities to those used in the ancient monuments in the neighbourhood. In order to establish possible relationships between the quarry materials and those used in the artefacts, some samples from both the quarry materials and the nearby archaeological remains were taken for analysis. The samples were subjected to mineralogical-petrographical study and geochemical analyses of major, minor and trace elements. The mineralogical-petrographical characteristics were not sufficiently significant to differentiate the samples, since they could be correlated to the intrinsic variations of the material within the same lithologic level. On the basis of the content of some elements the samples from Campomarino area show a tendency to differentiate from all the others which, on the contrary, forms a homogeneous group. Therefore, it is not possible to distinguish the samples coming from the quarries of Torre Ovo and Madonna d’Alto Mare, nor it is possible to establish which of the two quarries the materials constituting the nearby artefacts come from.
