- The cathedral of Bari (South of Italy), one of the most remarkable
examples of Apulian Romanesque architecture, was built from 12th to 13th
century on the site of a more ancient church. It is essentially made of
local limestones, with different types of imported white marbles employed
for decorative elements.
A previous study, concerning the identification of the constituent marbles
used on the great apsidal window, identified their provenance as being
mostly from the quarries of Mount Pentelicon and from the island of
Marmara, both widely exploited in antiquity. This study allows the
hypothesis that such marbles could have been obtained from decorative
elements previously used in the ancient church on the same site (Calia et
al., 1992).
In the present work mineralogical-petrographic and stable isotope analyses
have been conducted on the marbles from the main and side portals with the
aim of improving our knowledge regarding the provenance of such materials
and their supply. The most commonly used marbles have been identified as
coming from Mt. Pentelicon, Paros and Carrara; marbles from the islands of
Proconnesus, Lesbos and Naxos are also present, although in a more limited
number.
