  • With the restoration work on the Basilica of the Santa Croce (Lecce), there was a spurt of activity in the field of restoration of historical buildings in Apulia (Italy) from the 1980s. This development underlined the need for a better understanding of the products used in the consolidation and protection treatments. However, the experiments carried out, and studies made, did not often deal with the stone materials used in Apulian monuments, apart from a few in “Lecce stone”. A research programme into conservation products has been set up in the hope of filling this gap, with laboratory experiments and outdoor ones on exposed walls, as well as a collection of documents containing data on work carried out over the last ten years and an examination in situ of the state of the buildings. • In this work we give the results of laboratory experiments on four water-repellent products applied on three different types of apulian stone (Gravina calcarenite, Gallipoli “carparo” and Trani stone. The products used belong to the category of silicones, acrylics and fluorinated and were applied both by capillary absorption and by brush. We did, in fact, want to compare products different in chemical composition and costs;we also wanted to understand to what extent the techniques of application of the products influence the results of the treatment. The experiments were carried out in order to evaluate the influence of the products on the behaviour of the stones in respect to the water (by means of tests of water absorption by capillarity, tests of permeability to water vapour, measurements of contact angle) and on colour properties. The treated samples were successively made to undergo saline crystallisation cycles, in order to evaluate the behaviour of the products in presence of soluble salts, since they are, in the Apulian region, one of the main causes of decay in materials. An analysis of the results shows that there is not a product which can be considered the most valid for every case, neither is there a single best method of application. So it is always important, in the choice of treatment, to conduct a specific experiment for each type of material and particularly when dealing with high porosity stone and that with high percentage of small dimension pores.
