  • The role of microbial assemblages is now recognized as very important for the trophic dynamics of the Antarctic Ocean, but the energy flux and geochemical cycling efficiency has not yet been fully explored. An important fraction of the organic matter in marine waters is present in polymeric form and not readily available for bacterial nutrition. Therefore, ectoenzymatic hydrolysis of dissolved and particulate organic matter (DOM, POM) finalized to the production of dissolved free amino acid and monomeric carbohydrates, is a crucial step in the bacterial cycle. These enzymes are mainly associated with the bacterial surfaces and only a small fraction is dissolved in the water. However, the proportion of dissolved free enzymatic activity depends on the type of enzyme and on the trophic and biological characteristics of the environment During the XV Expedition of the Italian National Program for Antarctic Research (PNRA), a study was carried out in a coastal area of Terra Nova Bay during the mid summer ice free period, with the aim of determining the bacterial standing stock, ectoenzymatic activities and the amount of C, and other main elements, that have flowed from monomers and salts to bacterial biomass via bacterial production (literal)
