Abstract
  • In this paper we present the preliminary results of a correlation between shallow geological structures and magnetic anomalies in the Gulf of Naples (southern Tyrrhenian sea), based on an integrated analysis of seismic and magnetometric profiles. One aim is to give a contribution to the knowledge of shallow geological structures in the Gulf of Naples, an active volcanic area during the Late Quaternary, showing a complex stratigraphic architecture due to the interaction of volcanic and sedimentary processes. Another aim is confirm the volcanic nature of mound-shaped volcanic bodies, individuated by seismic interpretation. Rapid lateral variations between acoustically-transparent seismic units, interpreted as volcanic deposits erupted during multi-phase volcanic activity of the Phlegrean Fields, Ischia and Procida islands complexes and regularly stratified seismic units, supplied by the palaeo-Sarno river mouth and by the Sorrento Peninsula tectonic uplift occur. The magnetic anomalies obtained along the same navigation lines of seismics give more insights on the volcanic nature of some seismic units. Even if qualitative, the correlation between seismic and magnetometric profiles allow to better assess the geological structure of the Gulf of Naples. A further quantitative integrated interpretation of data allows the three-dimensional reconstruction of the geological structure of the Gulf of Naples and the compilation of a new magnetic anomaly map of the Gulf (Siniscalchi et al., this volume) through advanced techniques of seismic and magnetic data processing.
