  • A comparativeanalysisofaconventionalindustrialprocessandamembranereactorplantforhydrogen production vianaturalgassteamreformingisproposedbycalculatingtwosustainabilitymetrics: mass and energyintensities. Theanalysistakesintoaccountmembranereactorsequippedwithhydrogen- selectivemembranes(Pd-based)whichcanoperateatmildertemperature(500 1C) andpressure (1.0MPa)conditionsandathigherCH4 conversion levels(90-100%)thanthatachievedinconventional industrialsystems. The useoftheMRretentatestreamtoproducethesteamrequiredasfeedforthereformingsection is proposedandforthisoptionareduced mass intensity is calculated(reducedamountoffueltothe process) withrespecttotheconventionalplant.Thereductionisintherange25-32%fortheMRs operatedat m=3and44-50%fortheMRsoperatedat m=2.Amoreimportantsavingconcernsthe energy use.
