- Water gasshift(WGS)isathermodynamicslimitedreactionandCOequilibriumconversionofatradi-
tional reactorisfurthermorereducedowingtothepresenceofH2 (ca. 50%)inthefeedstreamcoming
from areformer.
The upgradingofasimulatedreformatestreamwasexperimentallyinvestigatedasafunctionoftemper-
ature (280-320 oC), feedpressure(upto600kPa),gashourlyspacevelocity(GHSV),etc.usingaPd-alloy
membrane reactor(MR)packedwithacommercialcatalystCuO/CeO2/Al2O3; nosweepgaswasused.The
MR performancewasalsoevaluatedusingnewparameterssuchasconversionindex,H2 recovery and
extraction index,etc.,whichevidencetheadvantageswithrespecttoatraditionalreactor.
A Pd-basedMRoperatedsuccessfullyovercomingthethermodynamicconstraintsofatraditionalreactor
and, specifically,thedrawbackintroducedbythehydrogenpresence.Infact,aCOconversionof90%
significantly exceeded(threetimes)thethermodynamicsupperlimit( < 36%) ofatraditionalreactor
owing toca.80%ofhydrogenpermeatedthroughthemembrane.
The overallprocessperformancewassignificantlyimprovedbythepresenceofthePd-basedmembrane
and, thus,bythehighreactionpressurewhichallowedanddrovethehydrogenpermeation. (literal)
