Abstract
  • Alfalfa mosaic virus (AMV) affects 256 species of dicotyledons known around the world as being natural hosts; in France these include alfalfa, tomato, peppers, potato, etc. Furthermore, worldwide, 697 dicotyledon species are listed as experimental hosts, 51of which have been inoculated at the INRA of Avignon-Montfavet. The same laboratory has estabilished that wheat, barley and corn are experimental hosts. The virus is transmitted by a range of aphids and sometimes by seeds. Diagnosis of AMV can be carried out by a range of methods: biological or serological (ELISA) analysis, observation by electron microscope, or by molecular examination. The latter has made it possible to differentiate between France and Italian strains. Controls methods focus mainly on prevention, with aphicide control have proved to be not effective under field conditions. Source of natural resistance have been proposed in some plant species. Transgenosis is another approach proposed for the control of AMV. (literal)
