- This paper,which involves concepts of physics,chemistry,fluidynamics, spectroscopy, tries to shed light on LIBS, a new qualitative and quantitative analytical methodology to measure the concentrations of metals in different materials.
A lot of interest in this technology is presently dedicated as appears in the bi-annual international conference on LIBS. This topics is currently being supported by MIUR through the P.O.N. TECSIS.
This sector is linked to another important technology such as plasma assisted laser deposition, which is also represented in our institute (see \"Plasma assisted pulsed laser deposition for the improvement of the film growth process\", Appl. Surf. Science, Vol. 186, 533-537, 2002; \"Non-equilibrium conditions during laser induced plasma expansion\", Appl. Surf. Science, Vol. 208, 85-89, 2003). On this subject, apart from some first level theses, the institute also supported one Ph.D. thesis (A. De Giacomo). Impact Factor:1.515 (literal)

- Abstract
- We present a theoretical approach to interpreting optical emission spectroscopy measurements for
nonequilibrium conditions. In this approach both the fluid dynamics and the kinetics of laser-induced
plasma are taken into account, and the results obtained by the numerical model are applied to the
spectroscopic observation of the plasma induced by the interaction between a KrF laser and a metallic Ti
target. We have generalized the theoretical method to calculate the initial conditions for the plume
expansion that show the best agreement with experimental results. © 2003 Optical Society of America (literal)
