- The hydroxyl radical (OH) is the major oxidizing agent in the atmosphere, and local OH measurements constitute a valuable tool for the direct observation of chemical processes in the atmosphere and for testing photochemistry models. Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) has been largely employed with the open problem of its calibration, i.e. the disposal of a well-characterised source of OH suitable for field instruments assemblies. The novel Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) scheme that we demonstrate in this paper allows a simplification of the field instrumentation, since the same laser used for the detection of the atmospheric OH can be used for an on-line real-time calibration of the measurement. The calibrated source we propose consists of a N2-H2O low-pressure, low-power pulsed RF discharge cell, followed by a static NO cell. The simultaneous LIF detection of OH and NO produced in the discharge, of NO in the static cell, and of OH(A) and NO(A) emissions generated by the discharge, provides a continuous monitor of the absolute OH density in the discharge. Apart from its utility related to the use of such a reference OH source, the different choice of OH laser excitation, imposed by the need to simultaneously detect NO, can have potential advantages with respect to classical excitation schemes, since it allows spectral rejection of laser scattered light. - Abstract
- In this communication we propose a new Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF)
scheme that allows the simultaneous detection of OH and NO by a single
laser set-up. OH is detected by the Second Harmonic (SH) of a dye laser
tuned to the (0,0) band of the 3064 Å system, while its Third Harmonic
(TH) is used to detect NO through excitation of the (2,0) band of the g
system. This scheme is presented and discussed in the frame of its
potential use in field instruments for the measurement of tropospheric OH
concentration. (literal)
