Abstract
  • Factory-Ecomation is a challenging research project, whose technical objectives aims at innovating the way resources are consumed (and recovered) within a manufacturing Factory, acting both on new equipment developments and on the way those resources are controlled, chosen or managed. The problem is that is not enough. For Factory-Ecomation to become effective well beyond the scope of its specific end-users, it is necessary to frame its approach to innovation (in general terms) and towards the zero-emissions factory (in specific terms) under an architecture that could be applied seamlessly to other industrial sectors, independently from their specificities. A Project Reference Framework is therefore required. This deliverable focuses on the definition of such a framework by covering sequentially three complementary aspects: - First of all, within the introduction, a brief overview is presented of how the concept of production sustainability (in economic and environmental terms) is being accepted into companies; this will highlight the limits of the actual approaches and consequently remark where and why an holistic vision is needed for an effective paradigm shift in production. - The core of the deliverable will explain how Factory-Ecomation project concept, presented first at the proposal stage, has been extended and filled in during these first months of research to become a real project structure, and how this structure is conceived to be preparatory to effective exploitation into other industrial sectors. The reference framework here presented is complemented by the contents of deliverable 2.1, where the generalities of the approach find an example instance within the high-level functional requirements of Factory-Ecomation. - The final part of the deliverable is devoted to an aspect complementary to the Reference Framework and equally important: the reference guidelines. If in fact the project framework aims at defining the overall structure of a sustainable factory, identifying and structuring its key enabling elements, it is fundamental for a concrete exploitation to provide future users with easy-to-use guidelines for applying Factory-Ecomation concepts and approaches to the specific case offered by their factory. This deliverable is the results of the project objectives definition of WP2, where, thanks to the analysis and support of the end-users of the project, it has been possible to translate general concepts into a well-defined architecture. Nevertheless, the process of development of Factory-Ecomation reference framework does not end here, but, on the contrary, continues throughout the project. The development and integration phases of the project results will in fact provide further experience and therefore considerations to be used in updating both the reference framework and its guidelines, arriving at the Factory-Ecomation with an effectively exploitable set of sustainability-oriented indications towards the factory of the future.
