- Abstract
- Currently the strategic objectives of companies are focused mainly on economic targets, while ecological factors are only of minor importance in the decisions to be made in production environment. In order to change the environmental profile of the Factory-ECOMATION envisioned factory, it is first necessary to define new strategic targets and the corresponding eco-optimized functional requirements for the plant. The analysis and determination of these functional requirements is fundamental in order to choose appropriate approaches prior to the work of the development and implementation carried out in the RTD work packages.
An initial analysis has therefore been conducted to investigate the actual state, in terms of overall sustainability performance, of the two different production environments considered within Factory-ECOMATION. This will be the basis for identifying the most promising methodological and technological interventions for energy efficiency increase and environmental impact reduction.
The task has produced an analysis of the production systems at all levels, starting from an on-site survey, but also gathering relevant information from the end-users (technical drawings, maintenance guide, commercial data sheets, etc.). This activity has permitted to create a map of the plants, identifying the main production phases and their ancillary processes, leading to the assessment of all the most important entities that constitute the actual production environments of the project end-users, along with their characteristics and their mutual connections through materials, energy, wastes and information flows. Section 2 of this deliverable is therefore focused on Brembo and IKEA plants analysis, specifying:
- An overview of the plant process relevant to Factory-Ecomation, together with some of its most interesting performances;
- An in-depth analysis of the main production process phases and corresponding ancillary systems necessary;
- A summary of the points of interest identified as potential focus for the projects developments.
Direct result of the auditing activities of Work Package 2 is the definition of the preliminary, high-level functional requirements (objectives) of the project: thanks to the production plants analysis, the partners of Factory-Ecomation consortium have been able to propose a first-stage actualization of the project objectives proposed within the DoW (Description of Work).
Factory-Ecomation general framework has thus been divided into its four main components:
- Monitoring and data analysis platform;
- High environmental sustainability equipment;
- Eco-oriented decision support and optimal control platforms;
- Eco-labelling and standardization.
In the third section of this Deliverable, for each of the aforementioned points, a formally specified methodological approach, guaranteeing the future application of the Factory-ECOMATION framework to manufacturing facilities different from those considered within the project, has been adopted.
Starting from this formal approach fostered by the Factory-ECOMATION framework, specific areas of focus have been thus selected in the demonstration plants, these paving the way for a better investigation to be carried out during the following work-packages. The results obtained in this preliminary investigation of the
plants must be seen mostly as recommendations for a more in-depth analysis, coming from a preliminary evaluation of the previously identified process criticalities.
During each of the development WPs, an initial specific task will be conducted to further detail these high-level functional requirements, enabling the definition of the specifications of the project objectives defined in the following chapters. (literal)
