  • The paper wants to discuss gender equality in different disciplinary fields, focusing on the one hand, on results produced by the ex-ante assessment of research projects submitted to competitive funding stream; on the other hand, results of ex-post assessment of research. The aim is to figure out existing factors in the evaluation practices that might affect gender equality, either when the funding of research activities on a competitive basis or the evaluation of the quality of research are concerned. Our hypothesis is that evaluation represents a mechanism through which gender equality is betrayed, beside the quantitative or qualitative methods adopted. Although the available data do not allow depicting a causal relationship between the results of the ex-ante and ex-post evaluation processes, the presence of gender inequalities in both the processes would allow us to infer possible explanations of the existence of vicious relationships between evaluation practices and gender equality (under the form of research hypotheses when possible), to be used for further investigations of the issue. The paper uses Italy as a case. We develop the analysis taking into account the evaluation procedures and data of the PRIN-Projects of National Interest- a funding scheme for curiosity-driven research projects developed by the universities, as empirical evidences of the ex-ante assessment. Data refer to ten years (from 2000 to 2009) and four fields of science (Physics, Chemistry, Economics and Social sciences), the source of the data is MIUR, Italian Ministry of University and Research.
