  • Special session: \"What Do Researchers in the Social Sciences and Humanities Do? Understanding Impact in the Social Sciences and Humanities\" In this paper we want to contribute to the field by exploring the distinctive features, which characterize the career and the impact of PhDs holders belonging to social sciences and humanities (SSH) using Italy as a case. In recent times the interest toward understanding SSH impact in economy and society, and toward deepening the factors that can better the impact of the highly skilled human resources in these fields of science, are emerging. Social sciences and humanities (SSH) are studied at the University level by about 40% of high school graduates in Europe, and many of those continue to advanced research degrees. While a proportion of people with advanced degree stay in academia, there is no overall systematic understanding of: i) the labour market prospects of those advanced research degree graduates; ii) the careers that these degrees help them achieve; iii) the kind of contributions these trained researchers make to economy and society. The paper addresses the problem of impact answering two basic research questions. The first is how PhD graduates in SSH perceive the impact of their PhD degree on: i) the professional career; ii) the actual work; iii) the local and global economy and society; the second is to what extent the career histories of PhD graduates in social sciences and in humanities differ.
