- Abstract
- In recent years, the development of fully organic sensitizers, not containing metal atoms, has been at the heart of research in the field of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The employment of organic dyes should allow to overcome most of the problems associated with traditional ruthenium-based sensitizers, such as difficult purification procedures, low extinction coefficients and high cost of the metal precursor.[1] Most organic dyes for DSSCs display a highly conjugated backbone, in which an electron-donating and an electron-withdrawing group are often linked by a suitable spacer.[2] Here, we present the synthesis and application of some novel sensitizers featuring fused-thiazole heterocycles as spacers as well as light-harvesting units: the new compounds showed good photo- and electrochemical properties, and yielded DSSCs with power conversion efficiencies up to 3.53%.[3]
In addition, we will report preliminary results concerning the synthesis of new dyes with functionalized electron-withdrawing heterocycles as acceptor/anchoring units. The applicability of such compounds as DSSC sensitizers will be discussed based on their spectroscopic and electrochemical characteristics.
