  • Istitute of Molecular Biology and Pathology - National Research Council Department of Biology and Biotecnology - Charles Darwin Sapienza University of Rome - sede di Via degli Apuli 4 00185 Roma I\u00b0floor RESEARCH INTEREST My past research activity as CTER has focussed on studies of the induction of cytogenetic damage by environmental agents using cytogenetic assays. I have also developed flow cytometric approaches to investigate apoptosis and cell cycle alterations induced by various types of oxidative damage (genotoxic, mitotic, oxydative) and to evaluate the efficacy of various modulators. Currently my main research objective is to characterise anti-mitotic and anti-proliferative molecules which will then be selected for further preclinical and clinical assays as novel potential anti-cancer drugs: - of natural origin (plant extracts from the Cuban flora), and - synthetic molecules designed to inhibit selected mitotic proteins, such as Hec1 (Highly expressed in cancer protein 1). An additional research goal is to identify the induction of alterations in the process of mitosis after exposure to environmental chemicals (e.g. pesticides). These objectives are being carried out by analysing the expression of both proliferation markers and mitotic regulators by immunofluorescence and flow cytometry. I am in charge of the cell culture structure of the IBPM Laboratories at Via degli Apuli (San Lorenzo Section, Sapienza University) and of the IBPM flow cytometry facility (link).
