Abstract
  • An overview of the project \"PREMIER Analysis of Campaign Data\" (PACD) is presented, focusing on the results of activities conducted as part of the preparatory studies for PREMIER (Process Exploration through Measurements of Infrared and millimeter-wave Emitted Radiation), one of the three candidate core missions of ESA Earth Explorer 7. The primary objective of PREMIER is to gain a better understanding of the interaction processes linking atmospheric chemistry and dynamics with climate, by combining the complementary capabilities of two limb-sounders in the infrared and millimeter-wave spectral regions for high spatial resolution measurements in the crucial region of the mid-upper troposphere and lower stratosphere. A demonstrator of the PREMIER millimeter-wave spectrometer, the MARSCHALS instrument, was deployed onboard the M-55 Geophysica stratospheric research aircraft during a series of flights conducted in the Arctic region for the campaigns PremierEx (March 2010) and ESSenCe 2011 (December 2011). In the frame of the PACD project, MARSCHALS observations were analysed to investigate the performance of the retrieval on the main atmospheric targets (T, H2O, O3, HNO3, N2O, CO) in clear sky conditions and in presence of clouds. Moreover, an assessment of the potential synergy between millimeter-wave and infrared limb-sounding measurements was obtained by combining collocated data acquired by MARSCHALS and by MIPAS-STR. The results of the comparison, based on the ESSenCe 2011 data, between MARSCHALS retrieval products and the state of the atmosphere simulated using CLaMS (Chemical Lagrangian Model of the Stratosphere) and EMAC (ECHAM/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry) atmospheric chemical transport models will also be presented and discussed.
