Abstract
  • The effect of addition of a functionalized ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA-GMA) on disintegration profiles (ISO 20200 standard) of polylactide (PLA) composites with cellulose microfibers (CF) was investigated [1, 2]. Microstructure of PLA and PLA composites up to 56 days of incubation was investigated by FESEM, TGA and FTIR. The effects of gradual decomposition of samples (by visual observation) during their soil burial test for times up to 56 days are depicted in Figure 1a. All samples start to change their colour after yet 7 days of incubation, while they exhibited a considerable surface deformation with the presence of evident fractures starting from 21 days. This effect at 21 days of incubation was more evident in the case of PLA/cell (70:30), while a more stable behaviour was detected in the systems loaded with the same amount of fibres in presence of EVA-GMA. The disintegration test showed that all the materials were visibly disintegrated after 28 days (with exception of the EVA-GMA containing samples, where progressive darkening of the samples was clearly observed).
