- Abstract
- 3-D reconstructions are now an important tool also in the Earth Sciences due to the recent development of software packages which allow several kinds of operations starting from data stored in digital geological maps. The creation of the international GOCAD consortium by ASGA, which has been recently joined by the CNR of Milano (Centro di Studio per la Geodinamica Alpina e Quaternaria, Sezione di Geologia Ambientale), has strongly improved the use of an high-performance 3-D software (GOCAD), especially planned for several kind of geological reconstructions. Geological information both in raster and vector format recorded in a GIS, can be translated and imported into GOCAD, where a set of 3-D special virtual objects is easily constructed. The use of 3-D reconstructions are chiefly important in the definition of complex and irregular geological bodies such as deep seated slope gravitational deformations (DSGD), which largely affect several sectors of the Central Alps. As shown in the poster, the analyzed case-study concerns the reconstruction of a complex deep seated slope gravitational deformation affecting the Como Zuccone massif in the Taleggio Valley (Bergamo, Italy), which has been recently studied in detail (Crosta et al., 1999). The complex structural and geological setting of the area has been reconstructed in 3-D in order to restore the different stages of the evolution of the sackung and to test the validity of previously built 2-D sections. New sections automatically obtained through GOCAD form 3-D models, as well as 3-D volume balancing, can be consequently used to improve stability models. (literal)
