Abstract
  • A two-dimensional fully-nonlinear wave tank is applied to study the interaction of regular waves with a restrained VLFS with shallow draft. A hydroelastic model is used to predict local slamming-induced stresses. The fluid-dynamic model is based on the potential-flow hypothesis and the problem is solved numerically by boundary integral equations. Specific flow features are observed and required a special treatment to achieve accuracy. In particular, bottom emergence is observed and it is preceded by the rapid turning of high-curvature free surface around the front edge of the VLFS. The bottom emergence ends with bottom slamming and air-entrapment. A local analytical solution is introduced to cope with small angles between impacting free surface and bottom. Previous experiments have shown the presence of air cushions which is numerically confirmed and implies scaling problems of experimental slamming pressures. These are illustrated by numerical examples. Prediction of extent of bottom emergence show fair agreement with experiments. For violent air-cushion collapse, accuracy problems are observed.
