- The final result of the LEWIS project is a working prototype of a landslide early warning
system, designed to cover regional areas. It is based on the periodic detection of ground surface \"changes\" using low-cost, wide-area satellite data. The prototype has been validated with very encouraging results on two Italian test sites originally selected for the experiment. The verification of the approach on a third test site, in Greece, is still under way and will be completed in the next few months. The system proposed can be offered \"as it is\" for experimental implementation by interested administrations, but is clearly open to improvements in the future. Further analysis of data from a number of other areas must be carried out to refine the inference engine, which has been optimized for the presently available sets of ground data from the 2 test sites. New sensors in the visible and IR wavelengths as well as in the microwave bands can be easily incorporated, as they become available, to improve change detection reliability for land use and thus prediction
of slope instability.
In the authors opinion, the LEWIS approach is original among other projects in the EC program and appears to respond to the emphasis recently given by the European Commission and the European Space Agency on the application of EO satellite data for environment monitoring and disaster prevention. The recent decisions taken at the ESA ministerial council on the GMES program are a strong indication that the development of future systems such as the one we have envisaged for LEWIS will be considered with interest.
