- Abstract
- Along with the classical requirements for whitewares and building materials, clays used in modern ceramics are furtherly expected to fulfil the rapidly changing exigencies of sectors with relatively high innovation rate, such as ceramic tiles and some niche products (e.g. refractory rollers). These new requirements are driven by changes either in the product (e.g. porcelain stoneware bodies consisting of less than 40% clay) or in the process (i.e. brand new shaping and decoration techniques) or in both (the so-called \"product-process\", such as 3 x 1 m ceramic slabs). In the building sector, the demand for clay blocks with improved thermo-hygrometric properties (e.g. thermal conductivity, water vapour permeability) and durability is fastly growing. So, from this standpoint, clays are requested to play an even more specialized role, with emphasis on their rheological properties, technological behaviour in the shaping and drying stages, and microstructural evolution during firing. All these features depend in a complex way on the intrinsic characteristics of clays (i.e. mineralogy, particle size distribution, etc.). Clay suppliers are therefore facing the challenge: undergo this trend or rolling on the change, trying to design and engineer new clay products? This presentation will outline the main technological advances in traditional ceramics in the last decade and their effect on clay raw materials: use, technical requirements and future expectations.
