- Abstract
- In this essay I will examine three importants concepts of the chrysippean physics of space: that of topos, that of chôra and that of kenon. Since we know that these were treated by Chrysippus as incorporeals (the first two certainly, the third probably) I will start from the Stoic theory of \"something\" as supreme genus of reality. It provides indeed some important informations about the ontological status of topos and kenon.
In the second section I will analyze the texts (Stob. ecl. I 161, 8-26; Aët. I 20, 1 e Sext. Emp. adv. math. X 3-4) which report the definitions of the three above-mentioned concepts. I will try to draw from the analysis of this evidence a conceptual frame as coherent as possible, along a trajectory different from that traced by Algra in his masterly work Concepts of Space in Greek Thought (1995).
Finally, I will comment in detail a difficult and disputed passage from Plutarch (De stoic. rep. 1054 B-D). A analysis of this testimony is justified, in this context, from the occurence in it of the words chôra and topos. I will provide an interpretation of it that considers the content of both quotations from the chrysippean Peri dunaton as part of a conceptual experiment developed by Chrysippus and therefore as not representative of his official stance.
