Abstract
  • The presence of a novel and multifunctional prostaglandin metabolic pathway, leading to unprecedented prostaglandin 1,15-lactones, has recently described in the opisthobranch mollusc Tethys fimbria. In particular, 90 and 11-fatty acyl esters of PGF2.alpha.- and PGF3.alpha. 1,15-lactones were found in the mollusc reproductive gland (ovotestis) and egg masses. These metabolites originate, in the ovotestis, from the trans-esterification of PGF-1,115-lactones produced in the mantle, and are transferred to egg masses immediately before egg fertilization and laying. During the early oocyte developmental stages, in correspondence with the formation of larvae (veligera) and immediately before hatching, 9- and 11-acyl-PGF 1,15-lactones are partly transformed into PGE 1,15-lactone-11-acetates. Veligera obtained immediately after egg hatching were also shown to retain 9- and 11-acyl-PGF 1,15-lactones, whose role as precursors of both fatty acids necessary as energetic sources to young larvae and bioactive PG derivatives is hypothesized.
