- In this letter, we present the design and characterization in the classical limit of a fully integrated rf SQUID based device. The device contains a superconducting ring closed by a Josephson junction (rf SQUID) and a readout system based on a dc SQUID sensor coupled to the probe via a superconducting flux transformer. Both dc SQUID and flux tranformer are in a gradiometric configuration in order to reduce noise coming from the enviroment. (literal)

- The growing amount of theoretical interest in the area of quantum computing have stimulated in recent years research with the aim of developing a corresponding technology. The difficulty lies in the feature that quantum computation requires quantum state engineering, namely coherent control, preparation of entangled state and proper measurement, with a phase coherent time long enough to permit the necessary manipulations. Various quantum systems have been proposed as candidates to probe further into the quantum substrate and test the fundamental notions of measurement, macroscopic quantum coherence, entanglement and other issues concerning the quantum behaviour of macroscopic systems. Here we propose a new device for quantum Computation based on an rf-SQUID. (literal)

- Abstract
- We present the characterization of a fully integrated Josephson device consisting of a rf-SQUID coupled to a readout system based on a dc SQUID sensor. Particular care in the design is devoted to minimize the electromagnetic noise coming from the environment. We report data on dc SQUID performances as well as on the decay rate from metastable flux states of the rf SQUID in the classical regime. The low dissipation level and the good insulation of the probe from the external noise are encouranging in view of macroscopic quantum experiments. (literal)
