  • A new bis-ethylamide bis-isopropoxy hafnium (IV) complex [Hf(NEt2)2(OiPr)2] was synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy and its use as a precursor for the growth of HfO2 thin films by MOCVD is under investigation. The intermediate complex [Hf(NEt2)2Cl2(DME)] used as a catalyst in ethylene polymerization showed, in these preliminary studies, a low activity in comparison with the bis-cyclopentadienyl dichloride hafnium complex [HfCp2Cl2] and even less with regards to the correspondent zirconium complex [ZrCp2- Cl2]. Nevertheless, the obtained polyethylene presented challenging properties as a higher molecular weight and a high melting point, characteristic of the high density polyethylenes (HDPE). (literal)

Abstract
  • The new bis-diethylamide bis-isopropoxy hafnium complex [Hf(NEt2)2(OCH(CH3)2)2] as well as the intermediate solid-state complex {[Hf(NEt2)2Cl2.DME] (DME=1,2-dimethoxyethane)} have been synthetized, isolated and characterized by NMR spectroscopy. The dichloride complex was also characterized by X-ray diffraction showing the metal to be hexa-coordinated with a distorted octahedral geometry. Catalytic tests for the polymerization of ethylene have been carried out using this intermediate with [(NHMe2Ph)B(C6F5)4] as cocatalyst. (literal)
