  • Petrographic and spectroscopic analyses were carried out on the six female statues in The Loggia dei Lanzi (Florence) for determining the provenance of the marble. Quite unexpectedly the results showed all the five statues representing roman women are made of pure dolomitic marble, coming from the Island of Thasos in the northern Aegean sea. The marble of the Barbarian Prisoner Thusnelda is different, with a possible provenance from Phrygian quarries of Altintas, Turkey. The intent of the sculptor was to mark the diversity between the Roman e barbarian woman by using completely different marbles, appreciated Greek stones for the Roman women, in agreement with their high social status, and an exotic Asiatic marble for the barbarian Prisoner.
