- Aim of the study was to investigate the factors influencing eNO levels in a sample of schoolchildren with or without respiratory disease. We studied 767 schoolchildren, aged l0-16years,randomly selected from l6 junior high schools of Palermo,Italy.A respiratory qu estionnaire was fulfilled. Spirometry,skin tests,and oral eNO measures were performed. Among subjects, 13.7% reported symptoms of bronchial asthma(A),25.7% had rhinitis(R),and 60.6% were asymptomatic(C).The FEV1/FVC% was 88.8%(6.1 SD)in A ,90.5%(6.0)in R and 90.9%(6.6)in C (p0.002).Atopics were 5 5.2%i n A, 43.9% in R, and 35.9%in C. Among atopic subjects, 194(62.4%)had a positive skin test for dermatophagoides. Median exhaled NO(and interquartile range)was 19.5 ppb(12.7-35.0)in atopics and 13.9 ppb(10.6-18.4)in non atopics(p0.0001).Among asymptomatics,atopics had significantly higher eNO than non atopics(p0.0001).Doctor diagnosed asthma was asociated to increased eNO values only in atopic subjects(p (literal)
