  • The lagoon of Venice presents the peculiarity of extremely shallow water areas outside the navigational canals where the water depth normally ranges from 0.5 to 2 meters. Within the ECHOS Project an extensive acoustic survey was carried out with the aim of reconstructing the ancient morphological environment in some areas of the Venetian lagoon. A modified conventional echosounder was used for prospecting. The analysis of data showed that interesting features can be revealed in the sediments. In this context, some tests were carried out in known sites with a parametric sub-bottom profiler. The comparison with conventional methods shows that the parametric sub-bottom profiler would improve the quality of acoustic profiles and would, therefore, be a useful tool for investigating extremely shallow water lagoonal environments.
