- ABSTRACT: The main tasks of ISTEC Operating Unit will be the thermo-mechanical characterization of materials and joints. In the development stage of materials and joints, this activity will be used for the optimization of the production processes and, in the final stage, to assess the performances of the final materials and joints. The program of the mechanical characterization will be splitted into several phases and tests. On the starting composites, the Young's modulus, as well as the hardness, will be measured both in bulk and in the single phases, i.e. fibres and matrix, by nanoindentation tests. The fracture strength will be measured by four-point flexural tests. The flexural tests will be carried out also at high temperature, up to 1500°C in air. The properties of the interface fibre/matrix, as well as the residual thermal stresses, will be assessed by pus-down tests using a nanoindenter. The joints will be characterized by symmetric four-point bend test, as for the fracture str (literal)
